The global challenges confronting humanity are interlinked and interdependent. They are all global in nature and none of them can be addressed successfully by individual nations acting on their own. In order to effectively navigate the closely interconnected world that we live in and address its challenges, we need new levels of organization and strategy, and the development of stronger and more effective multilateral institutions than we have at present. One of the solutions that the World Academy of Art and Science (WAAS) has identified is the need for a new, comprehensive, all-compassing concept of human security. In order to convert this concept into reality, it is necessary to understand the limitations of our institutions, systems, policies, and even our way of thinking. Comprehensive, integrated perspectives are needed to replace fragmented understanding and piecemeal solutions. We need to transcend the limitations of a rearview mirror mentality to identify the very real possibilities for a better world and act decisively with full faith and determination in our collective capacity to realize them. The pressure generated by the multidimensional crises we face can be utilized to break free of encrusted ideas and overcome the resistance of vested interests and rigid structures. Now is the time to initiate steps for such a transformation without waiting for further crises to compel us. One example is the launching by the United Nations Trust Fund for Human Security (UNTFHS) and WAAS of a global campaign on Human Security for All (HS4A) to generate support for human security as a unifying approach that can be embraced and applied by people and organizations at all levels and in all fields of global society.
