Abstract

Bosnia and Herzegovina (B&H) has one of the largest diasporas in the world. Many aspects of this issue are widely argued and studied. However, most findings agree that the diaspora from Bosnia to Herzegovina is a resource largely untapped and that the connection between the diaspora and the homeland is weak and sporadic. The International Academy of Arts and Sciences in B&H aims to enhance the connection the home country has with its diaspora, to influence state authorities and institutions to develop instruments and mechanisms to slow down emigration and motivate a better connection between the homeland and the diaspora. We hope to build a network of “connecting loops” between the diaspora and the home country in the economy, culture, sports, education, language, religion, and all other segments of our society. The International Academy of Arts and Sciences in B&H is the only such academy in the country that has formed a section for diaspora. On May 22nd, the Section for Diaspora organized the first international conference titled “Paths of Diaspora and the Homeland: Diaspora for the Development of Bosnia and Herzegovina.” This article will provide a meaningful insight into the most recent research on the emigration from Bosnia to Herzegovina and the diaspora, examples of best practices, opinions, conference conclusions, and recommendations by those who have made this connection work for both the diaspora and the homeland and have developed initiatives that with a significant impact.
